Perticaia Trebbiano Spoletino DOC
Umbria, the Green Heart of Italy, has recently made news for its powerful red wines, linked to the rising star of Sagrantino, but it is best known for its white wines, blends of mostly Trebbiano and Grechetto. In fact, the majority of Umbria’s DOC wine production is white, mostly Orvieto white wine blends. From Azienda Agraria Perticaia, in the heart of Montefalco, comes Perticaia Trebbiano Spoletino DOC. This 100% Trebbiano is a fresh counterpoint to the largesse of their red wines, and makes a perfect summer wine.
Manually harvested, the grapes are processed gently, under a blanket of inert gas, to preserve its fresh and delicate fruit character. Fermented in stainless steel tanks, the wine is allowed to rest for at least 6 months on its lees. While ready to drink upon release, the wine will continue to evolve in the bottle, developing more complexity as it ages.
The Perticaia Trebbiano Spoletino DOC 2015 at this point is a simple, fresh wine. Aromas of tropical fruit and flowers unfold in this medium-bodied wine, fresh with good acidity. Its low alcohol and round mouthfeel makes for a refreshing glass of wine. It also pairs well with fish and chicken dishes.
If possible, I would recommend finding an older vintage, with more bottle age and development of body and aromas. But this is a pleasant wine, and will quench your thirst on a hot summer day, without demanding too much from your palate.
