Brothers Aaron & Jesse Inman continue to improve on their philosophy of blending to make the best wine. In this case, it’s a blend of six sustainably-farmed vineyards from three different California counties for their 2019 Lucky Rock Wine Co. County Cuvée Pinot Noir. Monterey County contributes 40% from its White Sage and Grava Ranch Vineyards, San Benito County adds 32% from Vista Verde Vineyard, and Sonoma County supplies 28% from Morelli Lane, Campbell and Landy Vineyards. Produced with a minimalist approach, it’s aged for nine months in 100% French oak barrels, and bottled in September 2020. It definitely meets their criteria and signature style, “Great wine at a great price”, a Lucky Rock founding principle. The goal is to make an enjoyable wine that is affordable enough to be drunk often, their mantra “Wines made with intention, not pretension”, rings clearly here.
This new Pinot Noir vintage is the best one so far that I’ve sampled. Rich and ripe right out of the twist top, dark cherry fruit and crushed stone aromas greet you. Beautifully balanced, with good acidity and supple tannins, red fruit and dried cranberries is wrapped around an earthy core with herbal accents. Well-integrated oak provides a frame for the long persistent finish. Seemingly with more concentration and intensity than previous vintages, this wine is slightly higher in alcohol (14.3% ABV), and has a luxurious mouthfeel. Lucky Rock Wine Co. County Cuvée Pinot Noir 2019 (SRP $22) is a good value for a California Pinot.
Lucky Rock Wine Co. was founded in 2013 by the Inman brothers, whose love of wine inspired them to make wines that can be enjoyed everyday. Prospecting for their own niche among California wines, these sons of gold miners have taken their “enjoying wine” sensibilities and translated them into two inaugural wines, the Lucky Rock County Cuvée Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.
They have added a "Prospecting Series" to their growing brand, a limited release, once a year, one-of-a-kind wine made only one time. The very first wine made and released in 2020 was a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
Wines that pair with the joy of life is their motto, more precisely “made with intention, not pretension”, easy drinking wines that reflect balance and California essence in the glass.
