Nobilo Sauvignon Blanc, intensely refreshing and delicious
Zesty Sauvignon Blanc channels the spirit of summer, crisp white wines that are high in flavor, low in alcohol, and easy on the budget. New Zealand offers stellar examples of these vibrant wines, and is recognized by many wine critics as producing the world’s best Sauvignon Blanc. Nobilo Wines, a pioneer of modern day winemaking in New Zealand, bottles two distinctive Sauvignon Blancs from different “collections”, the Regional and Icon Collections.
Intensely pure and vibrant, Sauvignon Blanc has personality plus, green-hued, juicy wines that brim with gooseberry, lime zest, and mineral aromas and flavors. For those of us who can’t really identify with gooseberry, think of it as a combination of green flavors, once tasted, you will instantly recognize it, combining lemon, lime, tropical fruit (such as passion fruit) with a touch of grass. New Zealand’s Sauvignon Blanc wines are especially brilliant, aromatic and pungent with an herbal-floral character, tangy and citrusy. Marlborough, at the tip of the South Island, seems to be ground zero for Sauvignon Blanc, with a longer and cooler growing season, the wines tingle with acidity, and have a grassy, lemongrass character. This is where Nobilo harvests its grapes, reaping the benefits of lots of sunlight and coastal breezes, resulting in a long hang time that develops a balance between fruit and acidity.
The 2015 vintage was one of New Zealand’s best ever, with plenty of summer sun to grow the grapes but a cool fall that allowed the berries to linger on the vine longer, developing exceptional flavors. This perfect ripening was a gift to Nobilo winemaker Dave Edmonds. With stunning fruit from Nobilo’s many vineyards, scattered throughout Marlborough, Edmonds harvested and fermented each block separately, giving him lots of wiggle room when crafting the wines. Edmonds loves the options involved in blending, which gives him the latitude to make a balanced wine with great mouthfeel.
The Nobilo Regional Collection Sauvignon Blanc 2015 is crisp and vibrant, smelling of freshly cut grass, grapefruit, lime zest, pineapple, passion fruit, guava, and a flinty mineral note. Intensely juicy, those same ripe tropical fruit notes of passion fruit, pineapple, guava, and lime burst onto the palate, accented by a green nettle note. Zesty acidity is balanced with a round mouthfeel, finishing long and persistent. A delightful aperitif, to start a meal or on its own, and great with food, especially seafood, summer salads, or lemon herb chicken, it retails for $13.
The Nobilo Icon Sauvignon Blanc 2015 is the flagship wine for Nobilo. Made mostly of the best fruit from the renowned Castle Cliffs vineyard, a long fermentation makes for a complex wine. Aromas of citrus, lime, passion fruit, gooseberries and nettles engage with floral notes on a flinty mineral nose. Rich and fleshy on the palate, this is an elegant wine, tropical fruit flavors are interwoven with citrus, herbal, and mineral notes, juicy acidity, and a long mineral-tinged finish. This sophisticated wine is excellent by the glass or pairs well with food, especially grilled or pan-seared seafood, accompanied by a side of asparagus, and sells for $22.
