For over 110 years, Viñas Familia Gil has produced wine that speaks of the land, united in their spirit of quality and tradition. Today, Gil Family Estates encompasses almost a dozen different wine estates across Spain’s classic wine regions. Juan Gil, their iconic Jumilla brand, expresses the extremes of the land, and defines its identity through its Monastrell wines. These bold red wines are world renowned for their quality and affordable prices. Recently, I sampled a trio of these fabulous wines, and found them so very food-friendly, great for summer barbecues or winter feasts.
Monastrell (also known as Mourvèdre), indigenous to Spain, thrives in the high-altitude vineyards, and is grown to survive the hot, dry Mediterranean climate. The chalky and limestone soils force the vine roots deep to find moisture, surviving and thriving in the harsh landscape. Old vines that are over 50 years of age, dry-farmed with no irrigation, are farmed organically and sustainably.
In 1916, Bodegas Juan Gil was founded by Juan Gil Jiménez, and later, his son, Juan Gil Guerrero, bottled the first namesake wine. Today, Gil Family Estates own or control approximately 4,364 vineyard acres, through eleven wineries scattered across ten different D.O.s, Protected Designations of Origin. Although each winery has its own defined personality, they are focused on old-vine indigenous varietals, shaped by their terroir, and offer excellent value and are highly rated. The Gil Family’s investment in technology has paid off, the sustainable farming reduces the winery’s environmental impact, while producing higher quality wines
The Juan Gil Etiqueta Plata (Silver Label) Monastrell 2023 has remarkable depth and structure, while at the same time, is silky and juicy on the palate. Deep purple black in color, explosive aromas of ripe blackcurrants, red berries, and plums, layered with sweet spice and smoky notes, come together in a plush concentrated texture, accented with dark chocolate and cedar notes. Well balanced, the supple tannins yield an extremely long and persistent finish, yet retains a sense of freshness due to its bright acidity. This yin and yang makes it a fantastic food wine, a perfect pairing for a wide variety of foods, such as roasted or barbecued game, poultry, lamb and red meat, or even mushrooms, paella, risotto, or pizza!
The Juan Gil Etiqueta Azul (Blue Label) 2023 is an intense Monastrell-dominant blend, 60% Monastrell, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Syrah. Low yields of high altitude grapes are macerated and fermented separately, then after malolactic fermentation, they are aged for 18 months in French and American oak barrels, yielding a complex and elegant wine. A deep red cherry color gives rise to powerful and opulent aromas of ripe black fruit, vanilla, cinnamon, Mediterranean herbs and smoke. Unctuous and mouthfilling, dark fruit flavors, accented by cocoa, are framed by round fine-grained tannins, with a long and complex finish, it’s a very good candidate for bottle aging. Perfect to pair with roasted meats, rich pasta ragu, or the best grilling recipes you’ve got, it’s a great summer time companion.
And finally, the Hijos de Juan Gil Guerrero Monastrell 2023, a special, one-time commemorative wine celebrating the Gil family’s 110th anniversary of winemaking. Flat out delicious, it represents the peak of the Gil family’s traditional winemaking knowledge with modern, sustainable practices. Made of 100% Organic Monastrell, the cherry red wine is captivating in its aromas of ripe blackberry, dark plum, and rhubarb, accented with cocoa, licorice, and wild herbs, framed by an elegant, toasted undertone. Rich fruit flavors, balsamic notes and spice inhabit a lively acidity, making for a silky mouthfeel, well-integrated tannins lead to a lingering finish. Another perfect companion for anything barbecue and with spice!
Juan Gil wines are not only high quality and food-friendly, but also affordably priced, ranging between $16-35. Sold in over 40 countries, and distributed in all 50 US states, it’s a small price to enjoy the magnificence of Monastrell!
