Hot August nights, cool Alto Adige white wines, it’s a pairing made in heaven! This northeastern corner of Italy is a Goldilocks sweet spot for wine growing, and the wines of Cantina Tramin, a leading producer of premium white wines, truly reflects this. Aromatically complex and intensely flavorful, with vibrant acidity and elegant structure, these mineral-rich wines echo the purity of the Italian Alps and the warmth of the sunny Mediterranean climate. It’s mountain terroir at its finest!
Cantina Tramin is a proud cooperative of over 160 families, who work together to produce quality wine. Founded over 125 years ago, in 1898, it became necessary to band together, and make their own wines, since grape prices were so low. Over the years, the families’ investments in replanting vineyards, matching terroir to variety, resulted in better quality grapes, which allowed the coop to fetch higher prices for their wines. There also was a shift in the types of wine produced, from 85% red then to 75% white today. Which seems to be fortuitous for Cantina Tramin, in today’s market, there is a lot of interest in white wine.
Each cooperative winegrower owns less than a couple of acres of vines, subsequently, their deep knowledge and experience of their land allows Cantina Tramin to produce superior quality wines. Since 1992, their head winemaker, Willi Stürz, has led the charge towards excellence. Working closely with winegrowers to optimize each plot, making the most of the numerous micro climates. Stürz orchestrates both single varietal and proprietary white blends, in the most expressive way, from the flagship Gewürztraminer, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Bianco. These are sensational wines in so many respects, mouthwateringly delicious, expansive in aromas and flavors, lingering long on the senses.
Cantina Tramin is unique, their strength is in their shared dedication, that focuses on quality and marketing. Over 150,000 cases of wine are produced annually, and from the premium prices, the money goes back to the growers, which is rare. In fact, according to Stürz, “it’s the only way to maintain the mountain culture”, encouraging the younger generation to follow through on his master plan.
A couple of months ago, I had the opportunity to taste through six of Cantina Tramin’s beautiful white wines, via Zoom with Winemaker Willi Stürz and Sales Director Wolfgang Klotz. I was struck by this spirit of collaboration, where everyone involved has a stake in the outcome. According to Stürz and Klotz, “Culturally we are used to being united, as a team, and the financial benefit is high for everyone when better grapes are grown, and better wines are made, fetching premium prices.” And then the wine tasting journey began!
First up, the Tramin Pinot Grigio 2025, which started as a “niche wine” for them. This is not just any Pinot Grigio, grown at high elevation, the limestone soils and mountain climate are good for “freshness in the mouth.” This is their Classic Series, and a best seller in their export market. According to Stürz, there is not one style of Pinot Grigio in Alto Adige, but more complexity among the DOC, where the “lower yields make for more terroir-driven wine.” Aromas of citrus, pears, apples and white flowers infuse the nose with Alpine freshness, smooth and balanced, with delicate flavors and a refined structure, the crisp acidity and texture leads to a long, slightly mineral finish. Excellent on its own, or pairs well with seafood, salads, mushroom dishes, and Mediterranean starters.
Next, the Tramin Sauvignon 2025, another Classic Series wine, is what Tramin describes as “the next best thing to frolicking in the rolling green meadows of the majestic Dolomite landscape.” And it is, lemon-green in color, with racy aromas of grapefruit, melon, cut grass and gooseberries, this light and lively wine, with flavors of citrus, elderflower, apples and mint, is mouthwatering in its essence, and has a persistent, slightly mineral finish. According to Stürz, they have planted more of this variety in the past year, and harvest the ripe grapes when they have that grassy Sauvignon Blanc essence with ripe flavors, achieved with that all important diurnal temperature swing. Obviously, this Sauvignon is an excellent match for oysters on the half shell, fresh crab, grilled white fish, smoked salmon and white asparagus.
Third, the Tramin “Stoan” 2023, a white blend of 65% Chardonnay, 20% Sauvignon Blanc, 10% Pinot Bianco and 5% Gewürztraminer, is so yummy, and simply brings the wow factor! It’s a classic case of how the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The name “Stoan” refers to the stony soil where the grapes are grown, which in the local German dialect is called “stoan.” Grown at high elevation, Stürz commented, “We can select the best day to harvest because of the small number of vineyards, which is a big advantage.” The Stoan project was started in 2002 as a high-end wine, vinified in 3000L neutral casks after blending, and left for a year on the lees before bottling. Intense aromas of peaches, poached pears and elderflowers, as well as tropical aromas of pineapple and mango are part of the exotic bouquet. This elegant white is complex, with layered flavors, a mineral core, well balanced and a slightly salty, long-lasting finish. Stoan would be an excellent pair with Asian fusion cuisine, suckling pig, white fish and cheeses, according to the winemaker.
Fourth, the Tramin Unterebner 2023, a 100% Pinot Grigio that is the top Pinot Grigio of the winery, a higher-end wine than the first one sampled. And boy, did it deliver! It was like a dance of flavor and texture, with character. Very ripe grapes, harvested by hand, with a long press, whole bunch and a long extraction preserved the character of the high altitude vineyards. Stürz commented, “A juxtaposition of power, richness and weight is balanced by freshness, making for an interesting expression.” Spicy and floral aromas reveal a mineral palate with flavors of pear and apple, a hint of vanilla accents the long and lasting finish.
Fifth, the Tramin TROY Chardonnay Riserva 2021, 100% Chardonnay, made in an Alpine style, is a nod to the “journey that Cantina Tramin embarked upon a long time ago.” “Troy” translates to “path” in the ancient local language, referring to the many years of research and experimentation that it took to cultivate Chardonnay on these mountain slopes. The soils, rich in clay although limestone-based, stay cool, and the wines have more longevity than if grown on gravel soils, which heat up faster. According to Stürz, direct sun and afternoon shadows gives the wine an unique character. TROY is so very distinctive and delicious, with impressive power and texture, while still retaining freshness. Fermented in French barriques, with sur lie aging, this intensely golden colored wine displays delicate floral and citrus aromas, along with notes of tropical fruit, peppermint, and hazelnut. Exotic flavors of mango, banana, and melon swirl around a lively mineral backbone, ending with a long, juicy and salty mineral finish. It definitely brings the wow factor! This is a very good food wine, excellent with lemon risotto and pasta dishes with truffle, for example.
Finally but not least, the Tramin Nussbaumer 2024, 100% Gewürztraminer, which is the most important variety for Alto Adige, known as its spiritual home, translating to “spice carrier” for its spicy, exotic notes. Gewürztraminer is a surprise, it smells sweet but it is dry. A kaleidoscope of aromas fill the glass, per the winemaker, “rose petals, lily blossoms and gardenia on the floral side; exotic fruits such as mango, cantaloupe, passion fruit, lychee and citrus zest; then spicy notes of dried herbs, ginger, saffron, cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg.” Stürz describes this wine as “a symphony of aromas and flavors”, a rich body, juicy with a salty minerality, and with age, “a nearly endless finish.” Nussbaumer is great with Asian food, smoky foods, seafood, saffron risotto, and so much more. According to Stürz, Nussbaumer has a huge aging potential, and the full aromatic complexity can take 10+ years to develop.
Although I mentioned that Cantina Tramin’s excellent white wines are perfect for summer, they are so food friendly, and so distinctive in character, that you’ll want to enjoy them all year long. Because within every bottle, and with every sip, you’ll taste the deep connection to the land, and the commitment to excellence, that the family winegrowers of Cantina Tramin live every day. Breathe in the Alpine charms, and taste the mineral essence of the wines of Cantina Tramin!
